Between two Islands
The painting explores cross-cultural dialogue, legacy, hybridity, and identity. Through this encaustic painting, I visually connect figures like the Greek admiral Andrew Miaoulis with Celtic knots, Pictish symbols, and the lion emblems of the Ionian State and Scotland. My aim is to prompt reflection on how diverse cultures and historical narratives are interconnected, how memory and heritage are preserved, and how individual and national identities are formed and intertwined across time and geography. The tactile nature of the encaustic medium, for me, further emphasises the enduring and interwoven quality of these universal human themes.
