Cynara, greek mythology, metamorphosis, artichoke
The metamorphosis of Cynara
Encaustic and oil on plywood
40 x 30 cm
2023

The painting draws inspiration from the Greek myth behind the origin of artichokes. I took a still of young ladies diving into the water because I was intrigued by the process of freezing a moment in time. Zeus abducts a beautiful girl named Cynara who escaped and returned to her home in a small Aegean island. He was so enraged that he turned her into an artichoke just before she dived into the water. I wanted to paint the two phases of transformation in one picture, the moment before her metamorphosis.
