Choosing the lock as a theme came up from an 1870’s photograph, a rare portrait of my great grandmother Marietta Valsamachi who wears a key around her neck. This saddened me because women of that era often appear melancholic in the photographs, despite their social status. I wanted to honor the memory of my great grandmother and show her how much I would have wanted to get to know her.
